By definition, six tenets set ecopoetry apart from what we think of as “nature poetry.” In a close reading of exemplary poems by Wendell Berry, Mary Oliver, and others, we will discuss the role art can play in bringing us in touch with the extraordinary beauty—and perilous fragility—of our evolving earth. We will expand the discussion to include some brief writing exercises (optional) to enhance your sensory memories and additional readings from your favorite poems, so bring one along to share. Our exploration will take place on the shore of the Chester, led by Meredith Davies Hadaway, award-winning poet and teacher of ecopoetry. Indiantown Farm sets the tone for our session with its long history steeped in Native American culture, a revitalized steamboat wharf, a secret garden, and trails meandering the 400+ acres of this conserved, 12th generation family farm.
