Washington College staffers and Champions of Ecology, Maren and Dan, will lead a walk in and around the beautiful River and Field Campus grasslands that will focus on birds, pollinators, restoration projects, and other ongoing avian research activities. Hear the calls of Northern Bobwhite (and hopefully see some too!) and other native grassland birds like Yellow-breasted Chats and Indigo Buntings, and appreciate blooming wildflowers like common milkweed and the fascinating insects who rely on them. The group will learn the process of managing grasslands and discuss the 20+ years of bird data from the site (collected almost entirely by undergraduate students). A prime example of successful ecological restoration, this expedition entails a few miles of leisurely walking on mostly flat but sometimes uneven ground. This is the perfect expedition for plant and animal lovers alike! Participants are encouraged to bring a hat, sunblock, binoculars, water, and snacks.
