Tour a property along the Sassafrass River that shows the beauty of a preserved and well managed property. This has been a labor of love for ShoreRivers’ Board Member Ken Shumaker. Join us as we learn about the history and the projects undertaken for the future of this amazing property! The features of environmental interest are:

  • 5 acre field with 500 black walnut and 500 white oak trees

  • 15 acre field (riparian buffer) with 1000 walnuts, 500 red oaks, 500 white oaks, 125 bald cypress trees

  • 6 pipe drop structures (arresting erosion off fields)

  • 2 ravines with bald cypress trees, culverts, and plunge pools to reduce storm water energy
An adjacent ravine restoration done by the Sassafras River Association that has 10 Regenerative Storm Water Conveyances to control storm water

  • A 25,000 gallon cistern under our front porch that collects rain water off the house and barn roof and cleans it with 2 “roof washers” before going into the cistern. Essentially a 25,000 gallon giant rain barrel.

  • For fun, a 1-1/8 acre arborvitae maze. 1500 arborvitae trees, 4 entrances, no dead ends.
