Galena Park Stormwater Retrofit

Purpose: Treat stormwater runoff from adjacent impervious parking lot and reduce nuisance flooding in the park.

Project: ShoreRivers partnered with the Town of Galena, MD, for this small-scale stormwater management retrofit project at the Town of Galena Community Park.  The project included five connected bioswale facilities which capture and treat stormwater runoff and reduce nuisance flooding. Three new parking lot “islands” were also constructed and planted with native shade trees to help cool adjacent pavement.  Each bioswale was planted with native flowering perennials and ornamental grasses, creating pollinator habitat as well as beautifying the parking lot and entrance to the park.  The project was completed in April 2023.

ShoreRivers designed and engineered this project in addition to managing construction. Design funding was provided by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, while the Maryland Department of Natural Resources provided funding for the construction (completed by Environmental Construction Company).

Estimated Pollution Reductions:  6.78 lbs. of nitrogen, 1.37 lbs. of phosphorus, and 1,786.07 lbs. of sediment annually.
