Environmental Education

ShoreRivers Education Department hosts and coordinates field trips with schools in Kent, Caroline, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, and Dorchester counties. These field trips include visits to Horn Point Laboratory, Adkins Arboretum, Blackwater Wildlife Refuge, and public school classrooms. We are always looking for capable, dependable volunteers to join us in the classroom or in the field.

Education volunteers must complete a two-hour training, pass a background check, and have experience in a classroom or working with children. Volunteers should be available for at least five hours a month during the school day (9am–3pm). If you are interested in becoming an education volunteer, please complete the volunteer inquiry form.

Meta Boyd shares her experience working with high school students through Students for Streams:
“I have been a volunteer here since 2012. I was immediately in awe of our lively, dedicated and FUN educational staff and felt younger by just being with them. I attend high school field trips and help as an extra adult on the water when the students are canoeing. I get joy from watching many high schoolers go out on the water, some for the first time. Volunteering is not a huge time commitment and I would encourage anyone with a little time and lots of desire to help youngsters to try it out."

Jane Selden shares her experience working with 3rd graders through the Sturgeon Discovery program:
“Despite having no teaching background, ShoreRivers provided me training prior to working with the students and I have found a real joy for working with kids during the school week. I highly recommend this program if you are looking for a way to become engaged and make a difference!"
