Enjoy the summer solstice with a Forest Bathing walk through the quiet meadows and native plants at Adkins Arboretum. Keep the towels, shampoo, and soap at home, it’s not that kind of bathing. Forest bathing is a research-proven and scientifically based practice of therapy since the 1980's. Forest bathing is also known as shinrin-yoku, in Japanese, meaning “bathing in the essence of the forest”. The two-hour saunter will take you along the arboretum paths and creek, providing you with a backdrop to prime your senses and to observe nature differently. With primed senses discover the simple wonders of the forest, explore and interact with the creek with childlike curiosity, and experience the therapeutic benefits of nature through forest bathing.

The forest bathing walk will be guided by certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, Sage Raindancer. Since 2018 Sage has led forest bathing walks in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, & West Virginia. He’s collaborated with companies such as REI and Arc’teryx. He has also guided walks for non-profits such as Corazon Latino, Parks RX, Nature Worx, Friends of the National Arboretum, and Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Sage has also led in-person and virtual walks for George Washington University’s Office of Integrative Medicine and Health, Georgetown University’s School of Medicine, and the Perry Point Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Participants are encouraged to dress weather appropriately and to bring bug spray, sunscreen, a bottle of water, a sit pad or a small lightweight camp stool/chair, and anything else one may carry on an easy day hike. The walk will be a slow-paced walk covering no more than half a mile for about 2 hours.
