Ever wonder where water and waste goes when you flush the toilet, do the dishes, or take a shower? Join us on a tour of the St. Michaels Waste Water Treatment Plant to find out! We will learn how environmental engineers have developed ways to clean the pollutants out of our waste water before it enters back into the water cycle and the Chesapeake Bay.

Waste water is full of things other than water - like organic matter, chemicals, and bacteria. the The Region II (St. Michaels) Wastewater Treatment Plant uses technologies that enable extreme reduction in pollutants like this, including nitrogen and phosphorous, prior to discharge to the Miles River are used.  The Region II unit process treatment technologies are refered to as Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) technologies. This ENR treatment facility is located on the same site as the original plant, which was placed online in 1978, and is now designed to treat up to 660,000 gallons per day.
