The Hermitage Farm is an extraordinary historic private property on the Chester River. Your tour will include both a glimpse into history and a look at innovative new land stewardship practices. Inhabited by the Tilghman family since the 1630s, the property includes working farm fields, forests, wetlands, and beaches. You’ll see the big house, family graveyard, stables, smokehouse, ice house, and one of the oldest standing historic quarters of enslaved people on the Delmarva peninsula. Wildlife is abundant, especially in the protected flowering meadow buffers and secluded coves. Participants are encouraged to bring a hat, sunblock, binoculars, camera, water, and snacks and/or picnic lunch. An optional visit to the private beach is available once the tour is complete, and picnicking there is welcome.
